09/05/2007 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Cubs poor play as of late is now starting to cost them ground in the National League Central. Chicago will try to get back on the winning track tonight when it plays the third contest of its four-game series with the Los Angeles Dodgers at Wrigley Field.
Chicago has lost the first two games of this series and six of its last 10 overall. To make matters worse, Milwaukee and St. Louis both won yesterday. The NL Central-leading Cubs now own just a half-game edge over the Brewers and have a one-game edge over the Cardinals.
Ted Lilly will attempt to put the brakes on a four-start winless drought tonight for the Cubs. Lilly is 0-2 over that span with a 6.55 earned run average, though he has been better over his last two outings. He gave up just two runs against Arizona on August 25, a loss, before yielding three runs and five hits in five innings of a no-decision versus Milwaukee on Thursday.
Lilly's skid has him at 13-7 on the year with a 3.89 ERA. He is 1-0 in three games (two starts) in his career against the Dodgers with a 6.57 ERA.
Eric Stults will make his fourth start of the year for the Dodgers tonight. He took a loss in his last start on August 25, allowing three runs and five hits over 4 2/3 innings over a 4-3 setback to the Mets, falling to 1-2 with a 4.23 ERA in seven games (three starts) this year.
The left-hander will be facing the Dodgers for the first time in his career and is taking the spot of David Wells in the rotation, as the recently acquired left-hander is serving a seven-game suspension.
Stults will try to carry over the momentum created on Tuesday by Brad Penny, who pitched seven strong innings in the Dodgers' 6-2 victory over the Cubs. Penny (15-4) yielded seven hits and just one earned run for the Dodgers, who have won three in a row and seven of nine.
Los Angeles is three games back of the NL West-leading Padres and three games behind Arizona, which leads the NL wild card.
Juan Pierre knocked in a pair of runs and Matt Kemp went 4-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored in the win.
The Dodgers also activated first baseman Nomar Garciaparra from the 15-day disabled list before yesterday's game. Garciaparra was out for almost three weeks with a strained left calf muscle and did not play in Tuesday's game.
Daryle Ward went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in the loss for Chicago.
Steve Trachsel (0-1), making his first start since the Cubs acquired him from Baltimore on August 31, suffered the loss despite six solid innings. The right-hander, who began his career with the Cubs in 1993, gave up seven hits and three runs with three strikeouts and a walk.
The Dodgers won two of three over the Cubs when the two squads met in Los Angeles in late May. Chicago is 9-8 versus the Dodgers since the start of the 2005 season.

New York, NY – October 3, 2007 – The dress rehearsal is over! The NHL preseason has ended and now that fans have had a glimpse of what is to come it is time to hit the book! Stanley Cup odds are live at MySportsbook.com, the world’s largest online sportsbook and casino.
The Ottawa Senators and Detroit Red Wings remain on top of the odds charts after an impressive start in the preseason. Betting lines opened for both teams at 6-1 in June. Since then the Sens have fallen to 7-1 and the Red Wings are now caught in a pack including the defending champion Carolina Hurricanes, the San Jose Sharks and the Anaheim Ducks, all at 10-1.
MySportsbook.com has also posted props on each team’s point total for the regular season. The Senators lead the charge at 108.5 followed by the Ducks at 106.5. Detroit will attempt a repeat for the prize as the Red Wings are deadlocked with the Predators at 104.5 a piece. The temporary loss of highly touted rookie Evgeni Malkin puts a lot of pressure on the stick of assistant captain Sidney Crosby - his lowly Pittsburgh Penguins are listed at 71.5.
Even if bettors are not brave enough to put their money on the underdog, an early bet on the favorites at sportsbook.com tends to produce bigger payouts than a mid-season wager. Placing a $1,000 bet last summer on the Detroit Red Wings or Ottawa Senators would have paid out to $8,000 and $10,000 respectively, opposed to a $2,500 or $3,000 payout at the beginning of the playoffs.
