Angels aim for sweep of A's

Baseball Betting Lines

09/05/2007 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim will attempt to move one step closer to an American League West crown and sweep the Oakland Athletics in the process when they conclude a three-game series this afternoon at Angel Stadium.

The Angels have taken the first two tilts of this series and can sweep Oakland in three games at home for the first time since turning the trick on April 11-13, 2003.

The Angels will hand the ball to Joe Saunders, who is 7-2 with a 3.62 earned run average this season. He was pounded in a loss to Toronto on August 25 before taking a no-decision versus Texas on Friday. Against the Rangers, he allowed four runs (two earned) on 10 hits in five innings of work.

The left-hander is 2-0 in four career starts against Oakland despite a 5.40 ERA. He bested the club on August 2 the last time he faced them.

Joe Blanton will start today for Oakland. He is 2-1 over his last four starts with a 2.42 ERA and is coming off a no-decision the last time out. On Friday, Blanton held Detroit to a pair of runs and five hits over seven innings with six strikeouts in his club's 5-4 win.

Blanton, who is 11-9 with a 3.88 ERA this year, has faced the Angels 13 times in his career. Ten of those have been starts, and the right-hander is 2-6 with a 3.69 ERA. One of those victories came on August 4 when he threw seven innings of one-run ball against them.

Garret Anderson hit a two-run homer in Tuesday's 4-3 victory, giving him an RBI in nine straight games. He can match a franchise record if he knocks in a run in his 10th straight game today and also has eight homers in his last 14 games.

Fred Lynn had an RBI in 10 straight games for the Angels in 1984 and Wally Joyner matched the feat two years later.

Howie Kendrick also hit a two-run homer in the win, the Angels' seventh in nine games. The AL West-leading club holds a 7 1/2-game lead over second-place Seattle, which lost to the Yankees yesterday.

Jered Weaver (11-6) won for the third straight start, giving up two runs on seven hits over six frames. The right-hander has given up just four runs -- three earned -- over his last 20 innings.

Lenny DiNardo (8-8) gave up the four runs on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts over six frames to take the loss. Shannon Stewart had all three runs batted in for Oakland, which has dropped two in a row and eight of 11.

Oakland still holds a slim 8-7 edge in the season series with Los Angeles.
